CANskate Ribbons & Badges

Wondering what our CANskate Program at NVSC is all about?   We offer the PreCanskate program for Preschoolers, and little skaters that are learning how the very first stages of skating, like standing up, getting down, and getting them moving. After PreCan... The Skaters work their way through 3 Ribbons in each Stage until they receive their badge in their Stage. Our Stage 1 and Stage 2 groups are combined together with very similar elements being taught. Our Stage 2 is Red. We also have Stage 3 which is yellow, now that we have more skaters ready for Stage 4, we Assess them & they move up to Jr. Academy, specific to Figure skating. We are currently teaching Stage 3 & Stage 4 together. Once you have achieved and mastered the Stage 3/4 badge skills, & assessed by a Certified CANskate, Professional Coach, or having the skills necessary with a Coach recommendation.... skaters have the decision if they would like to move up to the Jr. Academy Program, to specifically

Get to know your blades. Figure Skate vs. Hockey skates

New to the Skating scene and wish you knew more about skate blades, and sharpening requirements?   Proper equipment can make or break a skater, so its very important to gain some knowledge. Figure skates and hockey skates differ from one another in several ways, including the shape and features of the blade and the composition of the boots. These differences adapt each skate to its particular sport. Understanding the differences can help recreational and CanSkaters decide which type of skate is right for them. Most important is ankle support and sharpening.  Figure skates are designed with a long, gently curved blade (otherwise known as the Rocker), toe picks, and leather boots that provide support and the give necessary for deep knee bends. These features facilitate the jumps, spins and long sweeping curves that characterize the sport. Hockey skates, on the other hand, have a shorter, more steeply curved blade, no toe picks and a stiff boot usually made of rigid synthetics suc

CanSkate   Everyone at the Nicola Valley Skating Club welcomes you to another                                                                 wonderful skating season! CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. You will earn ribbons, badges and other incentives as you learn fundamental skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP Certified Professional Coach. Our Professional Coach is assisted by trained Program Assistants. Skaters progress at their own rate and Coaches make the sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning.
