Meet the Nicola Valley Skating Club Coach & Executive Members 2019/2020 Season
We all share a Love for Skating, with many years of experience and memories to last a lifetime.
That's what makes this Executive and Coaching Staff such a knowledgeable, dynamic & fun group to represent the Nicola Valley Skating Club in Merritt.

Head Coach Diana Lorenz

Skating since she was 5 years old with the NVFSC.  Junior Bronze Freeskate, & was competing at a Senior Bronze Freeskate level while achieving her Gold Dances. Diana skated Competitively in Juvenile ladies in the Okanagan Region, attending sections and was chosen as an alternate for BCGames.

Also enjoying playing hockey for the past 16+ years. Coaching basic skating Skills to Preschool hockey for MMHA & Power Skills to the Adult Recreational hockey programs, during the 2016-2018 seasons. But nothing gives her more pleasure than to Figure Skate. Diana took her CanSkate Coaching in August 2015, and hasn't looked back. She is a Certified CanSkate Coach, Certified Regional Coach, and Certified CanPower Coach and Provincial Coach Trained. Coaching all 6 of NVSC's Programs. PreCan, CanSkate, Jr. Academy, Jr. STAR, STARskate, Competive and CanPowerskate.

Jill Starrs
Jill has been skating since she was 3 years old, with the NVFSC. Jill achieved her Gold Freeskate, Gold Dances & her 6th Figure. Jill was a Competitive Figure Skater in the Okanagan Region. Jill has a passion for the sport, also sometimes being a CanSkate Program Assistant on the ice.
 Jill has been a huge influence on getting our Skating Club back on its feet, and we couldn't do any of it without her!! A lot of behind the scenes paperwork, designing program fees, in contact with our Sections & Skate Canada all the time, grant writing and very instrumental on the running of our Club.

Jen Lisle

She started skating when she was 5 years old. She achieved her Novice 1 (Canskate Level 4) Jen enjoyed skating for 5 years, and still loves to skate with her children today. Jen brings her love for skating and a great perspective to our Executive meetings.

Charmen Thoms
Charmen is not only our past Treasurer, she is also one of our Canskate Program Assistants. She started Skating since she was in Grade 4, with the Ashcroft Figure Skating Club. Charmen enjoyed skating for 3 years, and still Loves to figure skate today. She also has enjoyed being a part of the NVSC Club, & helping to get the Club started in Merritt again.
She has headed up many successful fundraising events for the 2019-20 season.

Lisa has been skating since she was little with the NVFSC. Lisa achieved her Gold Dances. She Coached Figure Skating for a few years with the NVFSC. She now has been helping out as a CanSkate Program Assistant, and one of Coach Diana's biggest helpers! She is also our Coach Liason. Its great to have Lisa and her experience with our sport. She keeps us up to date and well informed with what our Coaches needs are, and keeps the lines of communication open between the Executive, parents and Coach.


Registration/Assessment Coordinator 
Carla Sowpal
Carla has taken on the position as our Registration Coordinator since 2015 season to present. Carla also attends the NVSC meetings to help with ideas, a parents point of view and helps out behind the scenes in any way that she can. She is a huge asset to the Club in Merritt.












Linda Gillis - Treasurer has taken on the huge role as treasurer this year.

Kelly Reid- Director and Advertising  & brings knowledge and experience to our Executive.

Heather Quimet - Director Fundraising
Heather will be taking on the duties for lining up Fundraising for our Club. If its Purdy's, a bottle drive, or hot dog sales, or other new ideas to raise funds to our programs her and Charmen organize it together.



Thank you to all of these busy Mom's, Executive Members & Coaches for all that you do for the NVSC!!! We couldn't do all that we do without you!! <3

CANskate Ribbons & Badges

Wondering what our CANskate Program at NVSC is all about?   We offer the PreCanskate program for Preschoolers, and little skaters that are learning how the very first stages of skating, like standing up, getting down, and getting them moving. After PreCan... The Skaters work their way through 3 Ribbons in each Stage until they receive their badge in their Stage. Our Stage 1 and Stage 2 groups are combined together with very similar elements being taught. Our Stage 2 is Red. Get to know your blades. Figure Skate vs. Hockey skates

New to the Skating scene and wish you knew more about skate blades, and sharpening requirements?   Proper equipment can make or break a skater, so its very important to gain some knowledge. Figure skates and hockey skates differ from one another in several ways, including the shape and features of the blade and the composition of the boots. These differences adapt each skate to its particular sport. Understanding the differences can help recreational and CanSkaters decide which type of skate is right for them. Most important is ankle support and sharpening.  Figure skates are designed with a long, gently curved blade (otherwise known as the Rocker), toe picks, and leather boots that provide support and the give necessary for deep knee bends. These features facilitate the jumps, spins and long sweeping curves that characterize the sport. Hockey skates, on the other hand, have a shorter, more steeply curved blade, no toe picks and a stiff boot usually made of rigid synth...

CanSkate   Everyone at the Nicola Valley Skating Club welcomes you to another                                                                 wonderful skating season! CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. You will earn ribbons, badges and other incentives as you learn fundamental skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP Certified Professional Coach. Our Professional Coach is assisted by trained Program Assistants. Skaters progress at their own rate and Coaches make the sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning.
