Life on the Edge with Coach Diana

Welcome to the Fall 2017 skating season!!!

Everyone is starting to get all settled into all our programs now that we are 3 weeks into our Regular Season. I am so pleased with the progress with all the skaters in such a short time, in every program. It has been a pleasure to Coach the skaters, at every level.

Thought this would be a great time to talk about equipment care & fitting...

Carry a small cloth or hand towel in your skating bag to wipe off the snow and wet from your blades to keep them from rusting. Make sure to Not store your guards on your skates it can cause them to rust. Think about purchasing skate soakers from Canadian tire, or from a Boutique Skating shop if you want something a little more fun. There are some really cute animals and other designs to choose from.

Make sure your skates are properly sharpened. For our Jr. Academy, Jr. Star, & STARskaters please talk to me about a professional sharpener now that you are starting to wear more expensive Boots & blades. You can also speak with me about recommendations on where to purchase your Figure skates from as well.

Proper fitting skates is a very important aspect of skating. Ample ankle support is very important! Some skaters have weaker ankles than others and require a boot that provides a firmer support.
Make sure skates are fairly tight, mostly at the top, and that your laces aren't hanging down.

Skates that haven't got enough right support for your skater are easy to spot. Their ankles look like they are either turned inward at the ankles or out. They may also complain of their feet or ankles hurting. To properly attain their skating skills, they need "Good support", like the above picture.

Hope you are all enjoying the first weeks of skating!

Get to know your blades. Figure Skate vs. Hockey skates

New to the Skating scene and wish you knew more about skate blades, and sharpening requirements?   Proper equipment can make or break a skater, so its very important to gain some knowledge. Figure skates and hockey skates differ from one another in several ways, including the shape and features of the blade and the composition of the boots. These differences adapt each skate to its particular sport. Understanding the differences can help recreational and CanSkaters decide which type of skate is right for them. Most important is ankle support and sharpening.  Figure skates are designed with a long, gently curved blade (otherwise known as the Rocker), toe picks, and leather boots that provide support and the give necessary for deep knee bends. These features facilitate the jumps, spins and long sweeping curves that characterize the sport. Hockey skates, on the other hand, have a shorter, more steeply curved blade, no toe picks and a stiff boot usually made of rigid synth...
